About

Bures Dragon (Viewpoint, St Stephen's Chapel)

A public viewpoint beside St Stephen's Chapel, reached via a farm track off Cuckoo Hill on the eastern edge of Bures, looks out across private farmland to a chalk dragon measuring 75 metres by 95 metres cut into the hillside. The figure was created in 2012 to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and references a medieval legend, first recorded in 1405, in which a dragon terrorised the village and resisted all attempts to kill it.
