Stoke Bridge

Stoke Bridge carries Bridge Street over the point where the freshwater River Gipping becomes the tidal River Orwell, at the western end of the Ipswich Wet Dock. A crossing has stood here since at least the 13th century, and the shallow ford that preceded it is the reason the town grew up where it did. The present southbound span was built in 1924, with a second concrete structure added in the early 1980s. The quayside beside it, known as Stoke Bridge Wharf, has been regenerated with new paving, seating and interpretation boards, and is the base for Dock Stories, a free augmented reality trail that tells the story of the port through the merchants, sailors, dockers and photographers who worked it. The spot is open at all hours and costs nothing to visit, and it sits a short walk from both the town centre and the main Ipswich Waterfront, which makes it an easy first stop for anyone following the town's maritime history.
