About this event
Local amateur group Irving Stage Company presents: The truth is rarely pure and never simple. Oscar Wilde’s sparkling comedy of manners, misunderstandings and more than a little mayhem is as popular today as it was at its premiere in 1895. Wildean wit is at the heart of this romance with a touch of class - and farce - about two wealthy bachelors in the social whirl of Victorian London. All women become like their mothers. That is their tragedy. No man does. That is his. John Worthing, a foundling discovered in a handbag as a baby, is determined to win the hand of the noble Gwendolyn, but her formidable mama Lady Bracknell will have none of it. Meanwhile the raffish Algernon Moncrieff is determined to marry John’s ward Cecily – but both girls are determined on one thing – they will only marry a man called Ernest. The good ended happily, and the bad unhappily. That is what Fiction means.
