About
Clare Castle
The remains of a Norman motte and bailey castle occupy a commanding position in Clare, Suffolk, the mound rising 100 feet high with a base measuring 850 feet across. Originally built after the Conquest by Richard Fitz Gilbert, the site was later rebuilt in stone by the de Clare family and served as the principal residence of Elizabeth de Clare, one of the wealthiest women in medieval England.
