Constable to Contemporary

About this event

The third and final chapter of Christchurch Mansion's year-long Constable 250 programme, *Constable to Contemporary* runs from 24 October 2026 to 28 February 2027 at the Tudor mansion in Ipswich's Christchurch Park. Where the two preceding exhibitions explored Constable's life and the landscapes he loved, this closing show turns its gaze forward, asking how the work of a painter born 250 years ago continues to resonate with artists today.

What to expect

  • A dynamic juxtaposition of Constable's art with bold contemporary responses, exploring his enduring artistic and cultural relevance
  • New visual artworks created by learning-disabled and neurodivergent artists through Suffolk Artlink's Brave Art Unlimited programme, based in Ipswich, Lowestoft and Bury St Edmunds
  • Community-made work developed by young artists from Community Hub Ipswich (CHIp), who have been exploring what Constable means to them today
  • The broader Constable 250 engagement programme running alongside, including talks, tours and artist-led workshops throughout the school holidays

Good to know

  • The exhibition is presented by Colchester + Ipswich Museums, supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Arts Council England, and runs during normal Christchurch Mansion opening hours
  • Admission to the Mansion's permanent collection is free; check the Ipswich Museums website for any ticketed events or workshops attached to the exhibition
  • Christchurch Mansion sits within Christchurch Park, a short walk from Ipswich town centre and well served by local bus routes
