About
Bungay Market
Bungay's weekly Thursday market is held around the Butter Cross in the Market Place. A Thursday market has run here since 1382, when Richard II gave permission for the town's existing Saturday market to move to Thursdays. It is a small market today, with stalls selling fruit and vegetables, pet food, olives, cakes and hot dogs. The Bungay Town Trust has managed the market since 1871, when it paid £40 to buy the market rights and dues from the Duke of Norfolk. In medieval times the stalls clustered around a stone cross. By Tudor times traders had built permanent shops around the market area, and the cross was replaced with a roofed building to give shelter in bad weather.
